About Matthiasson

Since launching Matthiasson in 2003, our wines have been highly regarded by both customers and critics. Steve Matthiasson has been named Winemaker of the Year by both the San Francisco Chronicle and Food and Wine Magazine, and he is a six- time nominee for the prestigious James Beard Award. The New York Times wine reviewer, Eric Asimov, wrote that, “...their [Matthiasson] wines bear an agricultural stamp, as fresh, lively and alive as the best produce from a farmers market...”

"Matthiasson is a family-owned and sustainability-focused winery that got there the classic Californian way, they are farmers that became winemakers. They make some classic wines, but if you explore their catalog you can sometimes find some interesting grape varietals not normally seen in America. They have a huge passion for sustainable agriculture which translates quite well into their minimal interventionist methods and the wine itself. Their Cabernet is a bit more of an old-world style with only 13% alcohol, so grab it and see how different it is than a new world Napa Cab!"

"Steve and Jill Matthiasson walk the walk of true leaders in the sustainable agriculture movement. Not only are they wildly talented and smart, they are generous and kind with their time and knowledge- these are the kind of people I love to support.  Many of us *cough, me, cough* may think of Napa Valley wines as being heavy, jammy, often over-everything: extraction, alcohol, oak. Mattiasson wines have changed the way I think about the region. Food-friendly, balanced, elegant wines abound, Steve lives out the old adage that great wine is made in the vineyard. They work with a mix of classic and rare varieties, and consistently over-deliver on QPR (quality-to-price-ratio). You can feel really good about these wines, both because they are absolutely delicious, and because of the thoughtful farming and production behind them. "

"Hooray for natural winemaking practices, including organic farming and native fermentations! I am a big believer that meals should be enjoyed with wine, and the best wines to go with food are lower in alcohol and heavy oak influence, and inherently quaffable. Matthiasson nails this philosophy. They also produce some offbeat grape varieties, which is a breath of fresh air in a sea of Cabs & Chards.  "
